Vegetarians can shower on Mondays

- Media Response

There are better ways to save water than missing a shower once a week (Debate, 18/1/07).

To provide one day's food for a meat eater requires about 15,000 litres of water. To feed a lacto-ovo vegetarian requires only around one-third of this amount, about 4500 litres, while for a pure vegetarian ('vegan' - who eats no animal products) it only takes about 1000 litres.

Recently the Washington-based Worldwatch Institute reported that 70% of all water diverted from rivers and pumped from underground is used for irrigation, much of it to produce grain for livestock. Around the world, more and more water is used for raising animals instead of producing crops for direct human consumption, while rivers are dying and underground sources running dry.

As Ed Ayres of the Worldwatch Institute says: "Pass up one hamburger and you'll save as much water as you save by taking 40 showers with a low-flow nozzle."

Hear this, Alf Parker? Go vegetarian for good and you can happily shower every day for the rest of your life.
