perspectives on vegetarianism...

animals
& the ethics of eating. Independent living beings, or commodities for human consumption? The morality (or otherwise) of killing for food. (Killing when you don't need to... isn't that called murder?)

the environment
& sustainability for an ever-growing global human population and the critical environmental issues facing planet earth - almost every one linked integrally with the use of animals for food.

world hunger,
wealth and waste, and the politics of food production & distribution.

health -
& not just your own. Health at an individual and social level, & the epidemics of lifestyle disease costing us more than we can afford.

spirituality
Can the path to enlightenment be separated from the impact of our actions on other beings?

Whichever way you look at it, the answer is the same.

From any perspective, whatever it is you're concerned about, the likelihood is that vegetarianism is part of the answer, globally and locally. Globally, vegetarianism is an imperative for the 21st century and beyond. Our survival - physical, moral, spiritual - and the future of life (human and otherwise) on this planet depend on a sea change in our attitude to the use of animals for food.

Although it's not a magic wand to solve everything (life isn't so easy!), vegetarianism remains one of the most concrete, effective and accessible things YOU - as an individual - can do to create change for a better future. While Vegetarian Action and organisations like us work for large-scale shifts in public attitudes towards vegetarianism (and please support us if you'd like to be part of that), it's important not to underestimate the impact that each individual makes through their own daily choices - to thousands of animals; to water, land use and the global availability of food; to your own health and the social sustainability of our nation; to humanity's search for higher understanding.

Whichever way you look, the future is vegetarian..

The internet contains oodles of information on all of the above topics, and you can also read more in books and magazines. These pages - referenced from credible & scientific sources - offer just a taste of the various perspectives, or reasons for vegetarianism. We encourage you to use our links page and reference lists and read more about whatever interests you most.
